THE RULES OF WAR (film script)

A court room drama in which a military lawyer prosecuting a soldier for the murder of a wounded Taliban prisoner faces similar life and death decisions in her personal life.

THE STORY
An army Captain is charged with murder after video images of him shooting a wounded Taliban prisoner go viral. The case against him appears straightforward. However, Karen Lewis, the prosecuting lawyer, is up against the army’s top legal performer. She must also cope with an unfolding personal tragedy: her husband is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The two sides of her life follow separate paths until they are slammed together when the Captain finally takes the stand. His testimony doesn’t resolve whether the shooting was cold-blooded murder, as the “facts” imply, or a justifiable act of war as the defense claims. It throws the case and Karen into the sinkhole of a morally ambiguous area of the law: is mercy killing, or euthanasia, murder or an act of compassion? As she struggles with her husband’s request that she remove his life-support systems, her duty as a lawyer demands that she show no mercy in convincing the court that the Captain is guilty as charged.

THE STORY
War looms when the US blocks China’s attempt to establish a naval presence in Venezuela to protect access to resources from the America’s. Tom Wilkins predicted this confrontation, as did powerful business leaders who recruit Tom to help sell the world on a massive technology push to peacefully address provisioning needs. But something else is going on. Tom and the vibrant Dr. Maria Alvarez are caught up in the mysterious deaths of villagers in Africa and pursued by unknown assassins. As the world races towards nuclear Armageddon Tom and Maria discover the African deaths are part of the business group’s horrific, fall-back plan to relieve the pressures for war. They are about to bring the human population back into balance with the carrying capacity of natural systems. Tom may be able to stop them. But if culling is a lesser evil than nuclear war, should he? The fate of humanity rests on Tom’s decision – and Maria’s fate – but only if he lives!
